A group of 15 Chinese youth volunteers are travelling Namibia to explore and film Namibian’s starry night skies. Their mission is known as ‘The Star Chasing Adventure in Namibia’ – part of the Tencent QQ-Project X. The Chinese project aims to allow young people to explore the world and discover the beauty of nature, by using various technologies. The NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of Africa’s largest private nature reserves, offers an ideal venue for observing the starry night sky. Branding Manager of the Social Network Group in the project’s Marketing Department, Jenny Tung, says they want to live-stream the beauty and wonder of Namibia to people who cannot visit the country in person – using the internet and the ‘QQ Now’ App. She says the project also aims to raise awareness about environmental protection. She explains that Namibia is their second stop, after Ecuador where they did a ‘Species Exploration’ Programme. During their 10 days in the country, the exploration delegation are visiting the Quiver Tree Forest and Giant’s Playground for a Starry Sky Concert, the Rooisand Ranch for a starry sky with an astronomical telescope – and Kamanjab to visit the Red Mud Tribe, that is believed to have an ancient history with astronomy.
