Otjozondjupa Police Commander, Heinrich Tjiveze confirmed that 33 people arrested after hours of tense standoff with the Okakarara Police have been released on warning. However, Commissioner Tjiveze said six suspects who were identified to have been directly linked to assaulting police officers and causing chaos at the police station, will remain in custody. They will be charged for obstructing the course of justice, assaulting and incitement to commit a crime and breaching of peace and righteous behaviour. The clash follows after some community members stormed the police station complaining about the way officers enforced the Liquor Act and crime prevention. Twenty one people, including a pregnant woman, were seriously injured in the altercation. Four of those have been admitted to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital. Three police officers also suffered serious injuries. Ombara Otjitambi of Ovaherero Traditional Authority, Vekuii Rukoro, visited the scene to appeal for calm. An internal enquiry will be conducted and report findings shared with the Inspector-General’s office for a decision.
