The Karundu Primary School in Otjiwarongo has a shortage of space for learners and qualified teachers. School principal, Juliet Chaka says there were 1 382 learners enrolled in grades zero to seven in 2018. The principal says this resulted in classes having about 40 to 50 learners per teacher. Chaka says the overcrowding in the classrooms affected the performance of the school, which largely serves learners from the Orwetoveni residential area at the town. She has highlighted challenges of lack of enough desks, tables for learners, stationery and teaching material. The principal has called for the Ministry of Education to look into these concerns, as the school has vacant teaching positions, that have remained open for the past five years. School board member, Rosina Awases, has urged parents to be involved in their children’s school work, and for learners to be disciplined at all times.
