The Namibia Water Corporation (Namwater) has decided to retest the quality of Katima Mulilo’s water. The first test a consultant had done for a kidney doctor, who wanted to open a dialysis centre at the town, tested positive for bacteria. NamWater shared its intention to run new tests on the water in response to a local newspaper’s publishing of the abandonment of the dialysis centre at the town, after the detection of bacteria in the water. The consultant had tested samples of the town’s water in South Africa and found that the bacteria found in the water made it unfit for human consumption. NamWater Spokesperson, Johannes Shigwedha, said the company had activated its Water Quality Plan process to conduct new tests on the water. He said Namwater strictly adheres to the Government’s requirements for water quality standards and tests water quality on a daily basis. Shigwedha said Namwater suspects that the samples tested in South Africa were not handled according to set procedures and will retest the water. He explained that results from the retest Namwater will be available within 10 days and the water utility will share them with the public when they become available.
