Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi says he will focus on providing employment opportunities and increase the return of African youth to the continent, among other priorities during his one-year tenure as Chairperson of African Union. El-Sisi was elected Chairman of the AU during the 32nd ordinary summit underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took over the rotating chairmanship position from Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame. El-Sisi has already unveiled ambitious plans for the continent, which includes financial and institutional reform, peace and security with focus on post-conflict resolutions. Egypt was suspended from AU in 2013 over a military coup against former President Mohamed Morsi but the suspension was lifted in 2014. Some AU member states argued that it was in the interest of the continent for the issue to be solved from within. International organisations like Amnesty International has already raised concerns over Egypt’s track record on human rights. They say, the pressure will now be on the African Union to ensure that the north African country upholds its values and full implementation of reforms adopted under Kagame’s chairmanship.
