The late liberation icon Andimba Toivo ya Toivo is most famously remembered as saying the “Struggle will be long and bitter”. Indeed, many did not live to see and enjoy the fruits of independence. But as those who were there and experienced the difficult and bitter end of the struggle unpacked their stories today, one could not help but feel a spirit of oneness – the unity that drove them to fight their enemy with a smile of determination.
