The 33-year-old bus driver who was arrested following the death of two learners at Windhoek Gymnasium Private School was denied bail during his first appearance in the Mariental Magistrate’s Court. The accident happened on the B1 road between Kalkrand and Mariental on Sunday. It is alleged that Uasora Uanivi lost control of the tour bus with 65 learners on board and overturned. Jacques Venter and Angela Maiba both 13 years old died on the spot. Uanivi was arrested on charges of drunk driving and culpable homicide. During his appearance, he was denied bail and remanded in custody at the Mariental Police Station holding cells. The 33-year-old will make his next appearance on the 31 October this year. The school will hold a memorial service next week Thursday in remembrance of the two learners who died. The school’s Managing Director Colette Rieckert told Nampa that the service will be held at the school at 12h00. Meanwhile, hundreds of mourners including families and friends gathered in front of the school on Monday to pray, lay flowers and light candles to respect to the two schoolchildren who died and those who survived the tragic accident.
