Following the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have resulted in a death toll of five foreign nationals, Opposition Leader, McHenry Venaani, called on the African Union (AU) President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to condemn the acts. In a letter addressed el-Sisi on Tuesday, Venaani, who is the Chairperson of the Trade, Custom and Immigration Committee of the Pan-African Parliament, described the attacks as inhumane and against Pan-Africanism. He further requested the AU to call to order the South African leadership at a time where Africa has embarked on opening the free movement of people and goods through the Continental Free Trade Area Agreement. “This initiative is regressed by perpetual acts of xenophobic attack on innocent Africans and justified reasons provided are perpetuous, to say the least,” Venaani said. In 2008, about 60 people were killed and over 50 000 were forced out of their homes while in 2015, seven people died in violence. Venaani added that the fundamental laws of South Africa guarantee the sanctuary of all life and thus, the AU leadership cannot be silent spectators of these violent actions against Africans in a sister republic.
