The High-Level Panel on the Namibian Economy (HLPNE) is working on a report on unemployment it will hand over to President Hage Geingob. HLPNE has found institutional disconnect, lack of incentives for local companies and skills mismatch as catalysts for a 34% national unemployment rate and more than 40% youth unemployment rate. The panel held a two-day seminar in Windhoek recently on employment creation, in partnership with the International Labour Organisation and the Ministry of Labour. It found that Namibia has a number of job creation programmes with Government institutions and ministries, which are not well coordinated and compete for limited resources. The seminar wished to elevate higher education to a level that it helps citizens become self-reliant, compete globally and use skills and knowledge gained for their welfare. HLPNE’s economic growth summit about seven weeks ago secured about N$20 billion worth of pledges. Its report on employment creation in Namibia is meant to identify bottlenecks and help President Hage Geingob and his administration tackle unemployment in a meaningful way.
