A six-year-old boy, who was a pupil at the Onampila Combined School (CS), allegedly drowned in a water canal near Onampila village in the Omusati Region’s Elim Constituency on Thursday. Confirming the incident to Nampa on Saturday, Inspector Linekela Shikongo of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the region said the boy drowned while attempting to drink water from the canal. “He was coming from school with his school mate at the time and he tried to drink water in the canal but he, unfortunately, fell in and drowned,” Shikongo explained. According to Shikongo, the schoolmate of the deceased then went to report the incident to the older learners, who rushed to remove the body from the canal but was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital. Police identified the deceased as Michael Kasheeta Kwandu Uumati from Uukwadhudhi village. The deceased’s next of kin have been informed of his death and the body was transported to the Okahao Police mortuary for a post-mortem, Shikongo added.
