Namibian and international visitors are celebrating Oktoberfest where over 20 international beers are on show at the SKW Sports Field. The tradition of the internationally-celebrated beer festival started over a century ago during the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig in the year 1810. Thea /Uris, who attended the festival, says this is a unique culture where people from different backgrounds come to experience the German culture while experimenting with interesting and different brands of beer. Jessica Moore, a regular at the event, says the cultural diversity is absolutely Namibian. She says that Oktoberfest is a true representation of Namibian diversity. Elrie Seyfer, also a reveller at the event, says the fact that Namibians from different backgrounds coming together shows that they are united in celebrating this centuries-old German tradition, although Namibia was colonised by Germany. The organisers of the event on Thursday handed over the traditional attire known as ‘Men’s Lederhosen’ to City of Windhoek Mayor Muesse Kazapua. Many of the attendees gushed about the “amazing” traditional German food and the variety of German and local beer.
