The secretary-general of SWAPO has cautioned party members to take care of their voter’s cards. Sophia Shaningwa says the party has been alerted that people are threatening to hide voters’ cards. The threats to confiscate and hide voter’s cards are targeting mostly the elderly. SWAPO says such acts are aimed at preventing people from exercising their democratic rights through voting. Shaningwa says the attempts are further directed at de-campaigning SWAPO and its presidential candidate, Hage Geingob. SWAPO is contesting against 14 political parties in the 27 November elections. The Electoral Commission of Namibia registered more than 255 000 new voters during the supplementary registration period which concluded in July this year. The electoral body will display provisional voter’s register at designated venues between 2 and 6 November after which the final number of voters will be announced. Meanwhile, the party’s vice-president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged the rank and file to rally behind President Geingob. She reminded members of the 2017 congress outcome which saw Geingob emerging victorious as the presidential candidate.
