Kunene Governor Marius Sheya, is disappointed with the attitude of health professionals in Kunene region. Speaking at the official opening of the Kazetjindire Angelika Muharukua Maternity Waiting Home, at Opuwo this morning, Sheya said residents of Kunene complain about the unacceptable behaviour of health professionals at various facilities in the region. The facility was funded by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Union (EU) and the Ministry of Health and Social Services at the cost of N$5,3 million. It’s equipped with beds for 35 people, a kitchen, toilets and showers, clean drinking water and electricity. The Governor called on health professionals to “leave their stress at home and serve patients professionally”. Sheya called on Health Minister, Bernard Haufiku, to address the issue of nurses and doctors’ behaviour. He called on the management and administration of the home to treat expectant mothers with the respect and dignity they deserve. It was named after the late Kunene Governor, Angelika Muharukua, who was disturbed by mothers who use to give birth in the bush and even in the streets of Opuwo before they reach the hospital. To avoid deaths of the expecting mothers and their babies, she used to accommodate expectant mothers in her yard, to avoid complications and death during delivery.
