The Environment and Tourism Ministry has drilled a borehole to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in the Musese Constituency of the Kavango West Region. The solar-powered borehole is situated at Magongo village and will cost the government about N$400 000. Governor Sirrka Hausiku has on several occasions called for measures to mitigate the human-wildlife conflict. Control Warden for Kavango East and West, Chrispin Nkonkwena, said the elephant population in Kavango West has increased. He said they are destroying crop fields and threatening human life. Nkonkwena is optimistic that the water point will reduce the conflict, which escalates annually during the planting season. The conservancy area in the constituency is expected to benefit 14 surrounding villages once it is fully operational. Meanwhile, chairperson of the Regional Management Committee is happy that the ministry responded to the human-wildlife crisis. Joseph Sikongo warned conservancy members to guard against illegal farmers, who would want to take advantage of the water point and invade the conservation area.
