City of Windhoek plans to electrify 4 000 formalised erven at its informal settlements in five years. Corporate Communication Officer, Scheifert Shigwedha revealed that there are over 30 000 unformalised households within the City’s informal areas living without electricity. During a recent media briefing, Shigwedha explained that this had been caused by the ever-growing population growth in informal settlement areas that have overtaken the municipality’s capacity to provide formal housing and basic services. The municipality, therefore, embarked on a five-year Informal Area Electrification Plan for the informal settlements. Shigwedha stressed that the electrification plan will accelerate the current huge backlog with a set target to electrify 4 000 erven in the Tobias Hainyeko, Moses //Garoeb and Khomasdal-North constituencies. The detailed planning, designing and contract administration to electrify these erven will be done in-house by the city’s Department of Electricity. Shigwedha said the plan is to be reviewed annually to help council save financial resources.
