The NBC took note of a Media Conference organised by an aggrieved group of fishermen, accusing the national broadcaster of insufficient coverage. The NBC clearly refutes this allegation and wishes to go on record that it has built a reputable track record of unbiased and responsible reporting. NBC’s Chief News and Programming Officer, Menesia Muinjo said, the Corporation does not get involved in advancing specific agendas driven by specific stakeholders in news and programmes, adding that the NBC is a public service broadcaster that collects news, analysis the value and thereafter objectively broadcasts such news within the parameters of its editorial policy which meets international standards of journalism. Muinjo added that she does not want to get into the merits of the unsubstantiated allegations leveled against the NBC. The Chief News Programmes Officer confirmed that the NBC has discharged its mandate to cover this particular news story since it broke in 2015 and close to ten stories aired on TV and Radio news bulletins. The fishermen went on an illegal strike and were subsequently dismissed as a result. They demanded that the NBC act as an adjudicator in this matter. These demands fall outside the mandate of the NBC and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation is not the platform which adjudicates and creates solutions for labour disputes between striking workers and employers, there are best qualified stakeholders assigned to deal with labour disputes. This story has, regrettably, resurfaced again and the dismissed workers place all blame on the NBC, which is grossly unfair and unwarranted Muinjo added. The Chief concluded by saying the Corporation will always maintain a moral high ground in any story and will not take sides. “Our mandate is to inform, to educate and to entertain, and we are good at this and we will continue doing what we do best.”
