High Court judge Christie Liebenberg has reserved his sentencing of five convicts in the high-profile Social Security Commission fraud trial, to the first week of July this year. This comes after a brief session of pre-sentencing and mitigation arguments between the state and lawyers representing the convicts, today. During his submission, state lawyer Ed Marondedze, argued that Liebenberg should impose no other sentence, besides imprisonment for all the fraud convicts. Such sentencing, he says, will guard against any perception that there are two sets of justice, one for the poor and another for the rich, if they, as high ranking officials and wealthy persons pay mere fines. In the case of former Avid director, Sharon Blaauw, who was convicted of reckless conduct of business, the state is pushing for both a fine of N$8000 and a 2 year prison term. They argue this would send a strong warning to officials who sign documents without scrutinising these. Marondedze also demanded concurrent terms of imprisonment for Nico Josea, after he was found guilty of theft by conversion, and reckless conduct of business.
