In 1991, this zinc and lead mine situated 25 kilometres outside Swakopmund, closed down when the owners allegedly disappeared overnight, leaving behind a mess which was hazardous to the biodiversity of the Dorob National Park and tourists alike. Now, mining company North River Resources is hard at work in reviving an abandoned lead and zinc mine near Swakopmund, the company hopes to start with exports next year.
