Lack of a structured market system continues to hamper the operations of the National Kalimbeza Green Scheme Rice project in Zambezi Region. These are some challenges highlighted during a visit to the project by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources. Kalimbeza Rice Project is one of the government’s Green Scheme initiatives, aimed at increasing food production and supply. So far, the project’s rice is only sold at one local supermarket, while most of its loyal consumers are the Chinese, who prefer locally produced rice. The Deputy Director in the Directorate of Agricultural Produce said not having a market will negatively affect the project’s cash-flow. Berfine Antindi said if the situation persists, the project will be unable to compensate its workers. Production at the farm also becomes a major challenge, due to the breakdown of some of its farming implements. The equipment was bought abroad and there are neither technicians nor spare parts available. The Parliamentary committee will compile a report about problems being experienced at this and other agricultural projects, such as Liselo Farm and the grain storage silos in the region.
