The Aroab Small Farmers Cooperative have proposed that the Ombudsman’s Office investigate about 14 farms which have become dormant in the //Karas Region. The co-operative’s Spokesperson, Andrew de Juy, said about 14 farms in the region had not been occupied by the beneficiaries of the resettlement programme. He was speaking at the public hearing on land reform held by the Ombudsman’s Office in Keetmanshoop. De Juy claimed that some owners had not been on those farms for the last three and a half years, while there are no cattle and absolutely no one lives on the farm. The cooperative requested immediate investigations into the matter of people owning farms that are left desolate for years. It called for the group resettlement policy, where close to 15 people in the Khomas Region were resettled on one farm a year or two years ago, to become applicable in //Karas. The hearings are held countrywide to determine whether various aspects and conditions of the resettlement programme are met by applicants and Government.
