High Court Judge Christie Liebenberg has given an American charged in the murder of a Namibian seven years ago, the last chance to get a lawyer. Liebenberg told accused Marcus Thomas to have a private or State funded lawyer by 11 February 2019. He said the trial into the execution-style murder of Andre Heckmair in January 2011, will start on the date next year with or without Thomas having a lawyer. The judge will maintain the case at pre-trial and expects the American, to update the court on 28 November about the progress in getting a lawyer. He is charged alongside countryman, Kevin Townsend Legal Aid appointed Gilroy Kasper as Thomas’ new lawyer last week, following Kadhila Amoomo’s withdrawal. But, Kasper is fully booked. Amoomo is one of several lawyers who has appeared for Thomas in the past. The two men face multiple charges, including murder, aggravated robbery and attempting to defeat justice. During the duo’s first court appearance in January 2011, Townsend denied knowing the deceased, claiming that he first heard that name after his arrest.
