The Namibia Competition Commission (NCC) has warned taxi operators against unauthorised increase of transport fares. The commission says operators, who intentionally impose fixed taxi fare increases without following due process set out in the 1974 Roads Transport Act, will be subjected to punitive or criminal sanctions. The operators and their associations want to increase taxi fares without endorsement from the Transportation Control Board, as prescribed by the Roads Transport Act. The 2003 Competition Act further prohibits competing undertakings, such as taxi operators from jointly colluding on prices charged on consumers unless, authorized through relevant laws. In a media statement released recently, the Commission appealed to taxi operators to desist from any price increases in the absence of an endorsement by the Board. The Commission argued that this would be regarded as price fixing. Operators have already decided to increase taxi fares by 50 percent, starting from September.
