Members of the National Council marked the 25th anniversary of the house’s existence on Tuesday. The house was established in 1993 as part of the bicameral parliament and it mostly reviews laws passed by the National Assembly. At the event, National Council Chairperson Megarth Mensah-Williams noted that from a humble beginning, the house of review has grown to become successful legislative chambers. Mensah-Williams the National Council never had its own building, lack of office space for its staff and poor remuneration for its parliamentarians compared to their colleagues from the National Assembly. The Chairperson says these are now things of the past while the number of MPs has increased from 26 to 42 while gender parity improved significantly from a single female in 1993 and the current 10. She, therefore, stressed that the council will continue to contribute towards the review and formulation of laws as per its mandate. One of the house’s veteran members, Cleotius Sipapela said the National Council has contributed immensely to the strengthen of the country’s democratic principles. The silver jubilee celebration was held under the theme: ‘Providing a Profound Legislative Review and Oversight’.
