Members of the Special Reserved Force arrived in a helicopter and a minibus at a restive Okakarara Sunday afternoon. Residents of the Otjozondjupa town stormed the police station, allegedly assaulted three officers in uniform and blocked the gate of the station from around 02h00 Sunday morning. The crowd, as well as Ombara Otjitambi Vekuii Rukoro, asked that the arrested persons be released. Meanwhile, the crowd has grown significantly and the town’s main street is blocked off. The community claims that over 40 people, including a pregnant woman, were assaulted at local bars in the early hours of Sunday morning. They complained that the heavy handed approach by the officers, who went to close bars operating after hours, were unnecessary. They have not been allowed to enter the station. Another young man was arrested earlier for damaging a plastic police barrier line.
