President Hage Geingob has departed Beijing for home, after a visit to two-Asian countries, which concluded in China on Tuesday. Geingob’s visit started with a stop in Indonesia and concluded with his participation in the Forum on China-Africa (FOCAC) summit. Throughout his trip to Asia, Geingob was representing Namibia and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), whose leadership he assumed last month. The meeting in Beijing resolved among others, for China to support Africa’s campaign for representation on the UN-Security Council and renewal of commitment to infrastructure development under the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. Namibia and a number of African countries signed up to the Belt and Road initiative, and China availed about N$840 billion for new projects in Africa. President Geingob urged FOCAC members to prioritize development programmes and empower the youth in line with national objectives of each country. He held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and National People’s Congress, Standing Committee Chairperson Li Zhanshu. Both countries reached an agreement that will see China fund the upgrade of the Hosea Kutako International Airport, at a yet to be determined cost.
