The Women’s Action for Development (WAD) has launched a campaign on menstrual hygiene management in Windhoek. The campaign called My Period is Awesome aims to create a positive perception of menstruation and other natural processes in girls and women. It counters perceptions of impurity or shame some cultures ascribe to menstruation. Former WAD Executive Director said 17% of females in rural areas have access to improved sanitation facilities. Veronica de Klerk said 29% of Namibian schools have flushing toilets, and a quarter of girls use toilets that are not separated from those of boys. She said the type of facilities available for girls during menstruation often force them to miss or drop out of school. She said lack of infrastructure robs women of healthy, safe and hygienic menstrual management, and their privacy. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp says quality education will be realised when adolescent girls’ menstrual health is taken care off. Wise Economy Association Sweden has funded the project by N$1 million.
