Minister Stanley Simataa has urged the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to run its operations within its means while having taken cognisance of insufficient government funding. The Minister of Information and Communication Technology says the corporation’s spending on operations now stands at 68% of its budget. Simataa has warned that this rate of spending is unsustainable for the corporation, due to its dependence on Government funding. He has urged the NBC to review its operational spending, and find ways to make it sustainable henceforth. Minister Simataa says this will only be possible if employees and shareholders meet their end of the bargain, in the interest of the corporation. He has further reminded employees of the value they contribute to the broadcaster in ensuring that it continues to remain relevant in the world of digital transformation. The minister has stressed that access to information is a fundamental human right, as he cautioned NBC employees to be careful of denying the public this right during future strikes. Stanley Simataa shared the remarks at a meeting with NBC employees in Windhoek. Currently the national broadcaster needs about N$710 million to pay off its debts.
