A new African Union policy will hopefully strengthen the inclusion of African people with disabilities in mainstream political and social activities. A workshop to review the draft policy is taking place in Windhoek. The AU Disability Policy Framework is a mechanism aimed at respecting, realising and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and enhancing their political and socio-economic inclusion throughout the African continent. The Deputy Minister of Disability Affairs Alexia Manombe-Ncube says the exclusion of people with disabilities in politics, and socio-economic spheres of society condemn them to a life of dependency and expose them to discrimination, isolation and marginalisation.
