Five cases of baby dumping have been recorded so far this year by the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region. In the latest case, a baby girl was abandoned in the Tulinawa residential area of Swakopmund on Tuesday. A crime report issued by Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Gurirab said the newborn baby girl, wrapped in a blanket, was found lying next to a dustbin. “She was discovered by a taxi driver who was picking up a learner in the area, who notified the police,” he said. The baby was in a stable condition and was admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital for observation. A criminal case has been opened and is under investigation by the Gender-Based Violence Protection Sub-Division of the Erongo Region. The police issued a request for anyone with information leading to the tracing of the baby’s mother to report it to the police. Gurirab said the latest incident brought the number of baby dumpings in Erongo to five so far this year. In the previous case in May this year, a security guard at the Walvis Bay State Hospital discovered the lifeless body of a baby boy wrapped in a refuse bag in a dustbin in one of the hospital’s toilets.
