A sergeant in the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Ongwediva has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting a suspect to death at the town around 02h00 on Tuesday. Crime Investigations Coordinator for the region, Deputy Commissioner Hilja Haipumbu confirmed the incident to Nampa on Wednesday, saying it occurred at the Ongwediva Town’s New Reception location. Haipumbu said the deceased, yet to be identified, reportedly attempted to break into the police officer’s room without knowing that the suspect was inside. A crime report availed to Nampa on Wednesday said the suspect then allegedly went outside the room and chased down the deceased as he tried to flee from the scene. The deceased allegedly turned back and pulled out a knife at close range, after which the officer also pulled out his (private) pistol and reportedly shot the deceased in the chest. Two Okapi knives, an undisclosed amount of money and cellphone recharge vouchers were found in the deceased’s possession. The identity of the officer is withheld pending his appearance in court. Investigations into the matter continue.
