Two car accidents and a shack fire led to the deaths of three people in the Erongo Region over the long weekend, the Namibian Police have reported. According to a crime report issued by Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu on Monday, an 18-year-old girl succumbed to injuries she sustained in a shack fire at Otjimbingwe on Friday. Memory Garises was rescued from the burning shack with about 80% burns all over her body, he said. She was transferred from the Karibib State Hospital to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital and died there on Saturday. “It is uncertain what the cause of the fire is at the moment as the shack was said to be electrified,” the report said. Meanwhile, in Swakopmund, a boy aged one-year and eight months died after being run over by a taxi driver who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Leonard Natangwe Ukelo. Ukelo was crossing the road near his home in the Mondesa residential area when the accident occurred. The 25-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. In the second accident, a 49-year-old man died on the C14 gravel road outside Walvis Bay. A bakkie with 10 occupants was headed to Farm Nabasib between 10h30 and 11h00 when the driver lost control of the vehicle after one of its tyres burst some 60 kilometres outside the harbour town. The deceased was identified as Malcolm McNab. The remaining eight passengers and the driver sustained slight to serious injuries and were taken to the Walvis Bay State Hospital.
