A 27-year-old member of the Namibian Defence Force at Grootfontein allegedly shot and killed another man before turning the pistol on himself Friday morning. The deceased soldier has been identified as Gideon Andreas and the victim as the 28-year-old Simon Filipus. The spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha confirmed the incident suspected to have taken place around 08h30. Mbeha said Andreas and Filipus both lived on an erf in the Soweto residential area. Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that Andreas did not pay his rent for a room he rented for a couple of months. It is thought that Filipus as the homeowner’s son might have confronted him about paying the outstanding amount. “We are also reliably informed that other tenants at the house held a meeting on Thursday to discuss Andreas’ failure to pay his rent and also his contribution towards their collective electricity usage,” said Mbeha. The police officer said the other six tenants agreed in the presence of Filipus to ask Andreas to move out. Andreas was notified that he should vacate the room he was renting by 10h00 on Friday. However, around 08h35 Friday morning, Filipus, who resided in an outside room, was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head in Andreas’s room. Andreas was found in the same room with a gunshot wound to the head. His personal licensed pistol suspected to have been used in the shooting was lying next to his body. Police investigations in the matter continue.
