President Hage Geingob has declared the late freedom fighter, Robben Island prisoner, trade unionist and Deputy Minister, Petrus Nangolo Iilonga a national hero and conferred on him the honour of a State funeral. The Presidency announced in a press statement that, following consultations with the wife, sister and family of the late Iilonga, the President has directed that his remains be interred at the National Heroes Acre on Saturday, 22 December. President Geingob has directed that a period of national mourning be observed in honour of Iilonga, during which all flags in Namibia will be flown at half-mast, with effect from Wednesday, 19 December to Saturday, 22 December. President Geingob applauded “an outstanding Namibian for his bravery, exceptional contributions to the liberation of Namibia, and steadfast service to the people of Namibia after independence in several capacities.” Iilonga died on Tuesday evening. He was 71.
