The Namibian civil servants’ housing scheme, which subsidises up to two-thirds of the set maximum purchase price, is under review as part of efforts to tighten the noose on unnecessary public expenditure. This was confirmed by Prime Minister (PM), Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila in an interview with Nampa to respond to claims from impeccable sources within Government that it is contemplating discontinuing the scheme as part of fiscal consolidation efforts. One of the sources who preferred to be anonymous said, the housing subsidy will either be reduced or completely done away with. The alternative option is to leave the subsidy unchanged for current employees and provide a reduced housing subsidy for newly employed civil servants. The Premier acknowledged that there were discussions around the housing benefit for civil servants, but added it was not precisely as the information put to her. She highlighted that the issue is a sensitive and important one, saying she knows of the queries and suggestions that were forwarded to her Office regarding the Housing benefits for public servants, further explaining that the queries to her office related more to whether or not the current practice was in full compliance with the adopted policies. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila dismissed assumptions that the Government is contemplating on discontinuing the benefit.
