Since Local Authority elections were held in 2015, women have featured prominently on the Swakopmund Town Council, with four being councillors. Swapo’s Daphne Nashilundo has been re-elected as Swakopmund’s Mayor for 2019, while Maria Elago retained her position as deputy mayor. Female leadership representation is nothing new to this Town Council since 2003, when Rosina //Hoabes was elected as the first female mayor and the late Germina Shitaleni also served as deputy mayor and mayor from 2006 to 2010.
