It was a proud day for Rosalia Sindimba who graduated with a diploma in Accounting and Auditing from the University of Namibia (Unam). Sindimba is the first student from the San community to graduate from Unam’s Rundu campus despite the Kavango East and West regions having sizeable San communities. She is also the first in her family to ever attend university. A visibly emotional Sindimba received a standing ovation from Unam Chancellor and former President Hifikepunye Pohamba as well as Unam Vice Chancellor, Lazarus Angula. Angula also paid tribute to the 24-year-old during his address to graduates. Hailing from Marema village in Kavango West, Sindimba said there are many challenges preventing San students from finishing school, including insecurity and being bullied and teased in school. Sindimba said while she is proud of her achievement she does not want to be the last San child to graduate from the Rundu campus, saying her dream is to see more graduates from her community. “We can make it like any other. They can just follow my footsteps. Even if you are 15 you can start school. You will make it if you have courage, just ignore the distractions,” she said.
