Retired Judge Simpson Mtambanengwe has died. Mtambanengwe a long serving judge on the Namibian Bench died in a Windhoek hospital on Wednesday evening at the age of 85 and after a short illness. A Zimbabwean national, Mtambanengwe served as a judge of the Windhoek High Court between 1994 and 2006 and as acting chief justice of the Supreme Court in 2003 and 2004. He was appointed acting Ombudsman before being appointed as an acting judge of appeal of the Supreme Court. The late Mtambanengwe also served as chairperson of the Electoral Commissions of Namibia and Zimbabwe as well the Public Office Bearers Remuneration and Benefit Commission, and chaired a commission of inquiry into the State’s health facilities. Mtambanengwe was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Zimbabwe in 1986 and was seconded to the High Court of Namibia some eight years later. The Herald News Paper in Zimbabwe quoted a family spokesperson as saying burial arrangements will be announced after repatriation of his body from Namibia. Born in Zimbabwe’s fourth largest city Mutare, Mtambanengwe is survived by his wife and three children.
