Police say businesses and commercial banks should know their employees, because they – and security guards – are mostly suspected to tip off, criminals. Despite numerous warnings for people to be vigilant when dealing with money, Namibians continue to lose thousands of dollars to criminals. Police say in just one month’s time, four robberies were reported, involving a combined amount of over N$700 000. All the cases happened as business owners were on their way to deposit or withdraw, large amounts of money from the bank. The City Police Public Relations Officer says in two of the recent incidences, businessmen were robbed of a combined amount of N$500 000, in separate incidences. Superintended Cillie Auala says one business owner was robbed at knife-point, as he entered his house from the bank. The stolen money was meant for employees’ salaries and has not been recovered. She says what makes it worse, is the suspected conspiring between those who are close to the financial transactions in the banks and businesses – and criminals. In one of the incidents, a bank teller was suspended for working with criminals. Auala advised banking institutions to intensify their security systems and prevent their clients from being robbed. Loitering in queues and inside the banks, is among the behaviour that banks should address.
