The United Nations General Assembly President, Peter Thomson, has condemned dumping of rubbish into the sea. He says the equivalent of one large garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the sea every day, which is forcing fish stocks to the point of collapse, and destroying marine life. Thomson, who hails from the island of Fiji in the Pacific Ocean and co-hosts the United Nations Oceans conference, told delegates that they owe it to humanity to restore sustainability, balance and respect with the earth and sea. The Ocean Conference Secretary-General, Wu Hongbo, also addressed the session, stressing that there would be no life on the planet without oceans and seas. The UN Ocean Conference is running until Friday. This First United Nations Ocean Conference attracted thousands of delegates, including Heads of State and Government, civil society, traders, actors, ocean and marine life advocates. The focus is on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by governments in 2015, with SDG 14 highlighting the need to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources.
