The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) spend about N$200 million every year in caring for the victims of road crashes. Namibia is reportedly listed as the worst road safety performer in the world. This is according to Minister of Works and Transport, Alpheus !Naruseb, who addressed the 6th annual Road Safety Conference in Windhoek at the weekend. He urged the National Road Safety Council to plan differently, as current efforts seem to be missing the target. Minister !Naruseb said the starting point in sustainable road safety efforts should be to drastically reduce the probability of road traffic crashes happening, by means of effective infrastructure. !Naruseb says care must be taken to determine the reasons for severe accidents so as to mitigate, if not eliminate, them. Chairman of the National Road Safety council, Eliphas !Owos-oab, agreed that it was sad to see the roads becoming a slaughterhouse” where many lives are lost and many injured, almost on a daily basis. !Owos-oab called on all motor vehicle and road user stakeholders to take part in urgent efforts to make the roads safer for users. Governor of the Khomas Region, Laura McLeod-Katjirua, also at the occasion, urged road users to be aware of their own behaviour and its impact on accident statistics. The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund spend about N$200 million every year, in caring for the victims of road crashes.
