Long distance travellers are being warned against illegal associations that increase fares unlawfully. The warning comes from the two rival transport unions, the Namibia Bus and Taxi Association, NABTA, and the Namibia Public Passengers Transport Association, NPPTA. Tariffs for long distance travel have reportedly increased from 220 to 250 dollars from Northern Namibia, which the NPPTA describes as illegal. The association explains that any price increase should come from the Works and Transport Ministry. Its Chairperson, Patrick van Wyk says, they need relevant stakeholders to assist in addressing the problem as its members also pay tax. NABTA President Vespa Muunda says commuters and long distance road drivers should refrain from increasing tariffs unlawfully, adding that there was no increase announced by the ministry. Muunda called on the Works and Transport Ministry, the Labour Commissioner and the Safety and Security Ministry to deal with criminals who are corrupting the transport industry.
