The Namibia Blood Transfusion Service, NamBTS, has warned that its blood stocks are running low. The service says blood transfusion collections dropped by 75% during winter as a result of immunisations. It says stocks are low despite efforts to collect blood before the Health and Social Service Ministry’s measles and rubella immunisation campaign last month. The Public Relations, Promotions and Recruitment Head, Zita Tobin, told Nampa that the unit needed type O blood urgently. NamBTS also extended its operating hours this week to accommodate donors. Its Centre on Windhoek’s Tal Street opened until six-o’-clock in the afternoon from Tuesday and would remain until Thursday, while the centre on Independence Avenue would operate until six-o’-clock on Wednesday. Donors at the coast may donate between one-and-six-o’-clock on Mondays only, at the Swakopmund Centre and between one-and six at the Walvis Bay Centre on Tuesdays.
