The Namibia Red Cross Society, NRCS, says it does not have enough funds to assist the about 11 500 people in the Kunene and Kavango regions through short and medium-term humanitarian interventions during the current drought. The Society’s national Coordinator of Resource Mobilisation, Rosemary Nalisa, told Nampa that they are short of reaching the 3 200 affected households in these regions. To address the matter, the local humanitarian agency launched the – Namibians Helping Namibians campaign in April this year. This is in addition to the emergency appeal launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IFRC, in September last year for more than 13-million dollars to support the NRCS. Cash donations, food items and non- food items valued at 500 000 dollars were received from local companies, but Nalisa pointed out that these donations were not enough. She said the NRCS was worried that its international appeal launched last year had pre-empted better harvest for this year, when the situation had gotten worse. She said, because no international funds would be received, Namibians should support the current helping hands initiative.
