Ovaherero, Ovambanderu and Namas from Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, gathered near Okakarara at the weekend for the 112th commemoration of the Battle of Ohamakari. The Leader of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority, Advocate Vekuii Rukoro said at the occasion that, the affected communities were entitled to restorative justice by Germany in the form of reparations. The Battle of Ohamakari between the Ovaherero and the German imperial forces took place on the 11th August 1904. The 2016 commemoration focused on ongoing genocide and reparation talks between the German and Namibian governments. Advocate Rukoro maintained that the gathering was a rededication to the correctness of the right of the Ovaherero to speak for themselves on the genocide. He appealed to the affected communities to bury their differences and strive for a common purpose on reparations. The call for reparations is in response to the genocide of an estimated 80% of the Ovaherero and 50% of the Nama by the German imperial troops between 1904 and 1908.
