The Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister is promoting local fish trade to improve food security. Bernhard Esau says his ministry and the fishing industry are, therefore, committed to a strategy on rewarding right holders, who sell more fish locally. He made the remarks while addressing the business community at Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region. The minister pointed out that the initiative would be implemented either directly or through enterprise development. Esau was happy to see that some fishing companies were doing an excellent job by increasing local sales with several fish shops being opened across Namibia. He said the strategy was aimed at availing national products to village and town dwellers. The government and the private sector are collaborating to increase fish donations to communities experiencing hunger due to the current drought. The ministry allocated 12 500 metric tonnes of fish to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Poverty-Eradication Ministry for donations to those affected. Esau said the food security initiative would succeed through a public-private partnership.
