Swakopmund in the Erongo region now has its own Police Public Relations Committee. Its aim is to work hand-in-hand with law enforcement agencies in addressing crime. Annett Kotting and Peter van Ginkel were elected as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Committee respectively, while other members will be elected at the next meeting. Erongo Police Unit Commander for Community Affairs, Sergeant Ileni Shapumba, spoke of the need for every town in the region to have such a committee. Stakeholders at the meeting were briefed on crime statistics at the town. Twenty-two cases of housebreaking were reported at the Swakopmund police station last month alone. Sergeant Shapumba said the statistics are worrisome and something urgent needed to be done to address the situation. He called on the communities to co-operate with the police to combat crime and other social evils. Shapumba suggested that with the latest technology, members of the community, especially neigbours, can work together in different ways to fight crime. He also assured the public that the police will intensify their efforts to fight crime.
