Rundu residents and government ministries, agencies as well as businesses are owing the Rundu Town Council more than 190-million dollars in unpaid bills. The money owed is for municipal services and land sales. The Mayor Verna Sinimbo says the non-payment of fees makes it difficult for the council to adequately make service delivery available. Sinimbo says NamWater threatened to cut water supply to the town, because the council owes 40-million dollars. In an effort to encourage businesses to pay for services rendered, Sinimbo held a meeting on Friday, to strengthen relations between the council and the business community. She called on the business fraternity to participate in development activities to create a healthy investment environment at the town. Business people in attendance were concerned with the status of Rundu as one of the dirtiest towns countrywide, describing it as bad for investment. They criticized the town council for the poor roads, especially at informal settlements where vehicles got stuck in washed-out gravel roads. The mayor pledged the council’s commitment in promoting interaction for public benefit.
