The National Assembly has adopted a motion on the Ratification of the Paris Agreement. Environment and Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta said Namibia handed in three projects for the funding from the United Nations Green Energy Fund. The projects include the construction of a desalination plant at a cost of 12-billion dollars, rural electrification of 200-million dollars and a wind energy project, costing 11-billion dollars to generate 500 megawatts of electricity. It aims at solving Namibia’s electricity and water challenges in a sustainable and environmental friendly way. The agreement was signed by 197 countries and aims at reducing greenhouse emissions. As part of the agreement, all countries are requested to submit plans on how they intend reducing greenhouse emissions. In his submission, Attorney-General Sackey Shanghala proposed that the Government introduces policies to reduce air pollution by banning the use of plastic bags and other non-biodegradable materials. On his part, Urban and Rural Development Deputy-Minister Sylvia Makgone proposed that communities be supported to plant trees in fighting deforestation and land degradation. The agreement was adopted ahead of the Climate Change Conference, due to be held in Namibia next month.
