The National Road Safety Council held a memorial service for people who perished in two different car accidents on the third of this month. The accidents, in which nine occupants burnt beyond recognition, occurred between Kalkrand and Rehoboth in Hardap region and between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja in Otjozondjupa region. The memorial service took place between Rehoboth and Kalkrand near the accident spot which claimed the lives of six people. National Road Safety Council Chairperson Elifas !Owos-oab said there is an urgent need to reinforce traffic rules and regulations by deploying competent police officers on Namibian roads. He said the National Transport Information System, Natis, also needs to improve its standards through bench-marking them against international standards. He suggested that Natis ensures drivers and cars are well qualified to be issued with licences, before taking to the road. NamPol Acting Inspector-General Christoph Nakanyala also urged experienced drivers to do introspection as they are in many cases guilty of causing accidents. Commissioner Nakanyala also called on people to obtain drivers licences from their own towns, instead of elsewhere.. On his part, Works and Transport Minister Alpheus !Naruseb warned drivers against testing the speed of their vehicles on national roads, saying they will be dealt with.
