The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) says it will seek assistance from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) if the Government replaces striking teachers with volunteers. Its Secretary-General, Job Muniaro, told a media briefing in the capital on Thursday that it would be illegal for the Government to replace teachers on strike in any way. Muniaro described such plans as unlawful, disrespectful and unconstitutional. He said teachers had followed the required procedures to strike in terms of the Labour Act. Muniaro, therefore, called on the Government not to try and look for volunteers to do the work of teachers that are on a legal strike. He stated that an injury to NANTU is an injury to all workers countrywide. The unionist said the workers were aware of the economic and social challenges the Government faces. But he insisted that their demand for 8% salary increase remained and that those challenges should not be used to exploit the rights of teachers. Public school teachers will embark on a nationwide strike next Thursday.
